Market Segmentation

A great article showing how the various car manufacturers fair in the US. Check out the map.

The old marketing way.

Today, you simply go to Best Buy, go online or to many other retailers and buy the latest console. Imagine that in order for you to buy a console, you had to write a letter to the company. Well this was the case when the first Nintendo was launched.

How do you see yourself?

More importantly, how do others see you.

How do you see yourself. Do people see you as you see yourself? Are you as funny as you think you are? Are you as good as you think you are? Having self awareness is key to success. Read this article to become more self aware.

What's in your paycheck?

A great little video showing you how your paycheck is broken down and to whom your pay is going to. Paycheck

Law, Employment and Rights. Great class discussion.

At what point can a company simply say no to someone applying for a job. At what point can you say no to a customer because you simply do not want them in your establishment? At what point does the employee have more rights than the employer?  Laws implemented are gradually empowering those who want something. It is their right? Is this leading to entitlement?  We don't like the answer we got and therefore we can take you to court in order to change your mind.

A great article as a starting point for a classroom discussion.

Ethics. To win or not to win.

Losing a game on purpose to get an easier route to the finals. Right or wrong?
If you were to play in a tournament and had two options. if you win the game, you would face the reigning champions. If you lose, you face a weaker team and thereby giving yourself a better chance of reaching the finals. What would you do?

The future of farming

With land becoming a rare commodity, the weather being unpredictable and demand constantly increasing. Farmers need to adapt. Sometimes the answer is literally right in front of you.

Psychology of buying behavior.

The aim is for a business to maximize your order. Sometimes the do you want fries with that is not the only way that a fast food business  up sizes your order. Psychology of buying behavior and impulse buying. Next time you go to a restaurant, think about how you are actually spending your money. Very clever.

Big shops save you money

Big shops save you money. How often have you gone into a supermarket for one thing and come out with a lot more than you originally planned. If you you stuck to your shopping list and did one big shop instead of going in on a daily basis, you wouldn't buy extra and in the process save yourself quite a bit of money over the year. If you saved yourself $100, what would you do with it? If you saved yourself $1000, what would you do with it? Save it, pay off any loans or credit card...... the options are endless.

Spare Change?

Not sure how many of you put your spare change in a jar when you get home. I have done this for a while and at the end of the year, there is always enough money for a nice treat, such as a restaurant dinner etc. Unfortunately, the majority of change is in small denominations such as the 1 cent piece. In the UK, there is a debate on whether the 1 and 2 pence coins should be eliminated. In Australia, the smallest denomination is the 5 cents coin, which makes a lot of sense in that the price is always rounded up or rounded down to the nearest 5 cents. This eliminates all the extra change being carried around and does balance itself out in terms of rounding up and down.

The magic of Photoshop

To follow on from my point about the magic of Photoshop. Here is a video of a 100 year old woman being altered.Next time you see an image, is it genuine?

Social pressure and Photoshop

A while ago I posted about the social pressure to look good and be accepted. Here is another example of what you can do with Photoshop. Take the pressure off.  Please be yourself and be happy with who you are.

If you buy into the need for perfection and the unattainable, then you will always be unhappy which leads to low self esteem, spending more money to make you feel good etc and even losing who you are as a person. See for yourself.

Action, Reaction and Consequence

With the snow on the east coast, there is bound to be disruption.
Disruptions lead to inconvenience, break up in routines and peoples plans. The consequence being people being late, missing various opportunities, accidents spending more money etc. Whenever something happens, there is always the Action, Reaction and Consequence. Take time out to think things through. Plus with every action there is always a winner and a loser.

It is cold, you use up more energy heating your home.
You are stranded at the airport, you spend more in the airport or stay at a local hotel.
You fall over and injure yourself, you buy medical supplies.
Its cold, you buy extra clothing.....
Cold weather is coming, you buy groceries in bulk so you don't have to leave your home.

Can you think of other consequences and winners

Commute

Dedication. Next time you cannot get to work. Ask yourself. Have you really tried?
